Talk about talking

A typical conversation with Katy at 1 year (+ 3 weeks) might go something like this:




  • Katy, what does a cow say? Mmmm!

  • What does a dog say? Ufff!

  • What does the clock say? BAH!

  • Oh, are you off then Katy? Bye!

The clock question perhaps needs some explanation. We have a chiming clock on the wall in the kitchen, and since we try to eat a family meal at 5:45 she always notices the 6 o'clock bongs - and even anticipates them. As the clock makes its little whirring noise a minute before striking, Katy already chimes in with an enthusiastic BAH!
In the picture: a chocolate icecream and a ride on the light railway in Markeaton Park (with Derby grandparents) turned out to be a real hit.

Pardon my post-natal brain, but it's only just occurred to me that I could post MOVING images of Katy here. This thought struck me only a month after it also occurred to me I could make little videos in the first place using my trusty phone. Sigh ... and I have to start work again in June, how ever will I persuade people I can still think straight? This mini-epic features Katy playing with what used to be a cat toy - formerly property of Tsi-Tsa - who doesn't seem to quite agree with this redistribution of wealth!

Full marks to Katy's new class teacher, who has taught them 2 new things in her first week (Katy used to complain that they only taught her things she already knew). The first was metaphor - which has to be the most important thing, in my book (and who knows, in a few years time it may be the most important thing in my actual book :-)). The other was a 'fact or opinion' game, which we have just been playing in the kitchen. You put up a 'fact' sign on one wall, and an 'opinion' sign on the opposite wall. You then read out a series of statements, and the children have to go and stand in front of the sign which they think is right for the statement. I could be wrong, but this looks suspiciously like they are being taught to think critically for themselves! Just a pity that the spelling needs a bit more work.

An eye for an eye, and ...

A tooth! A tooth! Clearly visible and razor-sharp. Sorry, but photographing a baby's tooth is like trying to bath a cat, so you'll just have to believe me. And just to confound us, after nights of behaving like an unsettled newborn, last night she went straight down and slept 11 hours without so much as a whimper.
